HUMVEE Story
SMP Multi Year Accessibilty Plan
Challenge :
Our military High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) require body armor in a climate where the ambient temperature averages 120ºF. The US government charged TACOM with finding a solution to reduce the in-vehicle temperature to improve the comfort of our service personnel using these vehicles.

Solution:
Unimotor was a major contributor to a redesigned HVAC system for this HUMVEE. Unimotor, one of SMP’s Temperature Control division plants, assisted in the engineering, manufacturing and supplying of the condenser coils, front and rear HVAC cooling module assemblies, and the condenser fan assemblies.

As the result of Unimotor engineering and ingenuity, the in-vehicle temperature was lowered from 95ºF to 83ºF for a 13% reduction. The project was tested to all of the stringent military specifications such as the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) MIL-STD-461E and MIL-STD-202 Method 101 for 1,000 Hour Corrosion Protection when designing and manufacturing these application-specific components.

Temperature Controls for the Next Generation of Current Military HUMVEE
Due to our innovative engineering on the military HUMVEE, where enhanced A/C was needed due to the required body armor (used in theatres around the world), Unimotor is involved from the outset in the HVAC design for the ‘next generation’ military vehicle scheduled for production in the latter half of 2010. Our contribution will include engineering solutions and manufactured supply for the Front HVAC assembly, the rear HVAC blower assembly, heater core, and evaporator assembly components for the complete HVAC system.

Other Military Vehicle Programs
Because of our past success providing innovative solutions to even the toughest challenges, we are already engaged in the systems development for the Military JLTV vehicle. The JLTV has a target implementation date during the 2010 thru 2012 time period and Unimotor is involved on the ground floor.  Unimotor has also been involved with the design of HVAC systems for other military vehicles such as skid-steer loaders, forklift trucks, and heavy support vehicle system.
